The stress of making less money

Changing jobs is very exciting. I'm calling this "the honeymoon phase". The phase where it is all still new, fun, getting lots of "thatta girls", and the engineering paycheck is not too far in my rearview mirror.  What I know about the honeymoon phase... it never lasts.

Stress, doubt, and fear are all part of life. They are going to show their ugly faces 3 months in and you will look at what you've gotten yourself into and thought "WTF? This was supposed to be super cool forever". #wompwomp

So how can you make stressful situations a million times easier?

Simple... and not so simple at the same time. Put your health first. This means...

Shouldn't this always be important? YES! Absolutely.

But let's face it, life gets in the way of doing what you know is best for your body.

When long work hours strike you abandon exercise and reach for the phone to order a meal. You drink lots of caffeinated beverages to make the day bearable and the moment you see a possible sleep-in day you use the night before to unwind with a couple of drinks... or three.

None of that is wrong. But there is an easier way.

Those types of things will only add to your stress. Now you get to not only be tired and overworked, but you get to be mad at yourself for not working out, for eating crappy foods, or having too much to drink.

It's way more fun to blame your job or some other circumstance for why you can't do something than to figure out what you can do.

If you are currently in a job that is not aligned with your values, dealing with a break-up, and/or dealing with any challenging or exciting life event this post is for you.

Decide to put your health first.

A healthy body can handle stress powerfully. A healthy body is less likely to snap at a co-worker, take out anger on your significant, or get easily frazzled when your pooch poops on the rug.  A healthy body is the ideal environment to handle stress.

When you are healthy and feel good in your body, there is nothing that you can't handle.

Sound to good to be true?

If you are in a situation where you feel like it is impossible to put your health first, tell me about it. I want to help you make healthy and easier part of your day-to-day no matter how long you spend at work or how many odds are against you.

Here is the Healthy Body Contract that I made with myself to put my health first. This is going to keep me in line and give me something to come back to when it would be way easier to just go home veg than put on my sneakers and go for a run.
